BIO

Kem works in Natural Language Processing, AI Safety, and Human-Computer Interaction. Her work addresses measurement and validity concerns in LLM evaluations and how to connect LLM evaluations to regulations issued by governmental standard bodies. These broad foci inform her central work in measuring harms that only appear at scale and beyond the user level, e.g., LLM large-scale manipulation and influence. Kem also works with Cornell Tech’s Break Through Tech AI Initiative and helped establish UMD as an Instructional Hub for the program. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Econometrics from Providence College.
